Keeping alpacas
12 noon-1:00pm in Ring 2
Pauline Robson from Westyett Alpacas rejoins the Festival speaker programme this year after a wee break to address some of the common questions she gets asked when she’s out and about at events with her alpacas.
Pauline has been interested in alpacas for many years and longed to keep some, but it was only after moving to a larger farm in South Lanarkshire that she was able to realize her dream. Starting with two pregnant females, the Westyett herd has grown with the arrival of cria and additional purchases and now numbers nearly forty and is still growing!
Pauline will cover basic alpaca information before moving on to what’s needed to keep alpacas well and the requirements for good husbandry. As their main purpose is as fibre producing animals, Pauline will talk a little about how much fibre they produce, the shearing process and uses of various grades of fibre. There are other reasons to keep these interesting animals and she’ll talk will also mention some of these too.
